Sit down, the kettle's still warm and the lamps on Tanner Bridge won't be lit for another hour, so we have time. There was a night clerk called Ruth Abney who worked the telegraph room above the Carrow Street post office, and every night at two she walked the long way home across the iron bridge, counting her steps against the slow pull of the river below.

One February she found a young man sitting on the parapet with a pencil and a scrap of paper, drawing a line that jumped like a mountain range. He'd copied it from a hospital chart his sister had left behind. 'It climbs when she's frightened,' he said, 'and goes flat when she sleeps. I want to be able to read her from here.' Ruth sat down beside him. They didn't speak again for an hour. They only breathed, in and out, the way the river did beneath them, until the first tram rang its bell at the far end of the bridge.
Ruth went home and, for the first time in years, did not count. Long after the telegraph room had become a bakery, a workman repainting the ironwork found a folded sheet tucked behind a rivet, a jagged line across it and two words beneath, inhale and exhale, written by a hand that had decided to be brave.
