Four matching swallow tattoos on inner wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four arms are held together, and each inner wrist or forearm carries a small solid black silhouette of a swallow in flight. The birds are simple, bold shapes with smooth edges and no shading, and they point in slightly different directions. The ink is black on skin tones, with a red bracelet on one wrist and blurred brick paving and dark clothing in the background.

The swallows came back to the potting shed the week the lilac went over, and you noticed first, standing on an upturned crate with a trowel in your hand and old mortar dust on your sleeves. Four of them, or you counted four, stitching the air above the water butt. Behind you on the path your cousins were arguing about whether the rhubarb needed lifting, and nobody else had looked up yet.

Your grandmother used to say a swallow would return to the same eave for thirty years if you left the door open, and she left the door open for everything: wasps, children, the tabby from next door asleep on the seed trays. After the funeral the four of you drove down separately and met at the gate without planning to. You spent the whole weekend weeding in near silence, not discussing the will, passing a flask between you like a relay baton.

On the last evening Maggie suggested the swallows, because they were the only thing the four of you had ever agreed on, and by Monday they were inked small and sharp on each of your wrists, all pointing in slightly different directions. You complained that yours was crooked. Maggie said that was how you knew it was yours, and that a flock flying in one direction was just a bad habit.

This morning the first chick's beak showed at the nest mouth. You carried the flask out to the shed, propped the door wide the way she would have wanted, and sat down on the crate to wait for the others coming up the path.
