Script quote across the foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
Four side-by-side photographs show a quote written in black script lettering along the side of a foot, one line per panel. The linework is smooth and even, with a few flourishes on the capital letters and dots after each phrase. A small solid red heart at the end of the final line is the only colour in the set.

Mags wrote the promises on the back of a tide table the spring I took the Skerry light, four short lines in pencil, and pinned it above the kettle where I would see them each morning. Together forever, she had written, and underlined it twice, as though I might argue. Never apart. I did not argue. A keeper's wife learns to write her hopes small, so they fit in the margins of the forms the lighthouse board sends out.

The supply boat came every third Thursday with paraffin, flour and the post, and in winter it came when the sea allowed, which was seldom. I kept the log in a careful hand: wind backing south-west, visibility poor, lamp trimmed at dusk, one gull dead on the gallery rail. Once, after nine days without a boat, I wrote beside the weather, Maybe in distance, and felt ashamed of it before the ink had dried. It was true enough, and I hated that it was.
She came out on the last boat before the equinox gales, with a sack of wool and a tin of red lead paint in her coat pocket. She said nothing about the promises. She climbed the iron stairs beside me and stood in the lamp room while I showed her the mechanism, then she dipped a brush and touched a single dot of red to the glass of the north panel, where the shoal lies under the water. When I lit the lamp that night, the red sector swept across the rocks and the empty sea, and I wrote the time and the weather in the log, then, in smaller letters at the foot of the page, the one line the board would never read: but never in heart.
