Script quotes about rain and stars on feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two photos show a pair of feet, each with a line of script lettering. One reads 'When it rains, look for Rainbows.' and the other reads 'When it's dark, look for Stars.' The lettering is delicate, with thin, even lines and flowing joins, and the capitals R and S are larger and more ornate. The ink is a dark grey-black on pale skin, set against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The 18:40 to Carlisle was cancelled twice before it finally rolled into Lancaster, so Dad and I spent most of an hour on the bench under the canopy, listening to rain drum on the tin roof. He kept patting his coat pocket where the cigarettes were. He'd promised Mum he'd given up, and he'd promised me too, which was why he hadn't lit one.

"Your mum would have had a saying for this," he said. She did. Mum kept a jar of them on the front room windowsill, scraps of paper in her looping hand, and every one was a small instruction for getting through a bad day. When it rains, look for rainbows. We used to roll our eyes at them. Dad was the one who found the jar after the funeral and read them out in the kitchen, badly, laughing and then not laughing.

The rain stopped as suddenly as it had started. Over the car park a rainbow hung above the bins like a bent hairpin, and Dad stood up so fast the bench rocked. "Look at that," he said, and I did, and for a second I forgot about the cancellation. The clouds peeled back and the sky went navy, and the first stars came out above the gantry lights. "And when it's dark," I said, because I knew the next one, "look for stars."

The train came in with its doors already steaming. Dad pressed a folded scrap into my hand, torn from the jar, with a line I had never seen: When you're far away, write down what you see. I found a seat by the window, wrote rainbow and stars in the fogged glass with my finger, and photographed them for Dad before the signal dropped near Oxenholme.
