Four small matching tattoos on arms and back
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four separate photographs of small tattoos. The top left panel shows two matching forearm tattoos of linked hands in bold black outlines and flat colour against a large orange sun, while the top right shows a tiny eye outline on the upper back and the bottom left shows the words LOVE, HOPE and DREAM in thin black capitals on the wrist. The bottom right panel shows two colour pizza slice designs in yellow, orange and red on the inner forearms, and the photos are taken in natural light with no faces visible.

The hatch seals with a sigh you feel in your back teeth, and Ines is already hooking her little finger through yours, the way she did at nine on the cargo ring of the Tallow Yard, swearing nobody would ever leave anybody behind. Beyond the viewport Halvorsen's dwarf sun hangs over the drift like a coin pressed too hard into wax.

Brannoch calls from the bridge that the quota is short and the jump window is closing. Ines squeezes once, then lets go. The Kestrel is hauling a dead freighter, the Sable Wren, whose cryo-pods still hum with sleepers nobody has logged. You take the lifeboat across forty metres of black with a torch clipped to your harness and a manifest in your fist that says the Wren carried eleven pods, not nine.
Inside, frost furs every surface. Pod seven is open and empty, its lid propped with a child's rubber boot. Taped to the underside of the lid is a drawing of two hands hooked together over a big orange circle, and beneath it, in careful capitals, PROMISE. You stay there long enough for your breath to fog the paper. Then you key the comms and send the only word Ines will understand.
The reply arrives before the Kestrel's engines fire: a single line of code, the hooked-finger glyph they used to scratch on the Yard's bulkheads. Through the lifeboat's glass the sun pulls clear of the drift, orange and patient, and you lift your hand to it with the little finger curled, holding on while the ship turns toward the light.
