Matching sister tattoos on wrists, arms and feet
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four close-up photographs of matching tattoos on different people's skin. Two wrists carry stick-style figures beside the words Sisters and 92 95, while a pair of forearms show small figures with a heart and vine motif, and a pair of feet have symmetrical mandala designs. The linework is fine and mostly black, with a few red accents in the middle top image, and each photo is framed neatly against a plain background.

The mackerel were late that year, so the Pell sisters rowed out past the breakwater on the ebb with nothing to show for it but a tin of bread and a length of tarred twine. Edie was the elder and did the rowing. Marrit sat in the stern and counted the gulls, which was the only sum she was any good at.

On the third day a squall came up from the west faster than the harbour master had said it would. They fetched up against the Vine Rock, a black knuckle of stone where the kelp hung in ropes, and they held on there with their cold hands locked together while the water came over the gunwale. Old Mother Hask on the quay had a saying about sisters: a rope of two strands will hold a boat when a rope of one will not. Nobody on the harbour wall remembered her saying it, but the sisters did, afterwards, and they said it to each other often.
They were taken off at dusk by a lamplighter's boy in a borrowed punt. Edie went back to the nets the next week. Marrit kept the twine, and every spring after she tied a loop of it round the wrist of whoever had been on the water with her, and when the fish came back in autumn the two of them split the catch down the middle, the same as the harbour has done it ever since.
