Four small occult symbols across fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Four small tattoos sit one per finger: a crescent moon, a pentagram inside a circle, a crystal ball on a stand and a heart-shaped planchette. The linework is thin and crisp, with the crystal ball and planchette using light shading and stippled detail. The pictures are shown in black ink only, set against pale skin in a two-panel close-up.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The heart-shaped board came up in the cage on the Tuesday, wrapped in a pit shirt that belonged to nobody. Old Tom Ridley found it on the landing at the bottom of Number Four shaft, face down, with the little pointer still warm from someone's hand. Nobody in Hollin Dale would keep it in the house, so it went to Widow Annis Crane, who kept a crystal ball on a brass stand in her front parlour and read the weather from it for farmers who never asked twice.

She sat with the board across her knees through the long nights when the pumps stopped. The moon came up over the spoil heap like a paring of cheese, and she drew a pentagram in chalk on the flags inside a ring of salt, because her mother had told her a circle keeps a question from wandering. Then she asked the board where the men were.

The pointer moved slow, the way a fishing line moves in still water. It spelled a number, then a letter, then a word nobody could read until the schoolmaster came up the lane and said it was an old name for a seam of clean coal under the beck. Annis sent word to the overman. They dug at the place the board had named and found six men alive behind a wall of stone, tapping on the iron, three days in.

The overman paid her in tea and a sack of coal. Annis gave the planchette back to the shaft head that spring, and the crystal ball stayed on its stand, and the moon went on being a moon. Somebody chalked a small heart beside the pentagram on the lamp room wall, and it stayed there until the rain took it.
