Planets and geometric star on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The top panel shows a row of outlined circles decreasing in size from right to left, with a ringed planet resembling Saturn in the centre. The bottom panel shows a star-like geometric shape made of intersecting straight lines, with a dense central point. Both are rendered in thin, even black linework on pale skin, with the planets set in a horizontal line and the star centred on the lower panel.

Mira Okonkwo-Vane had been counting the dots for three hours when the relay chimed, and she still had not found the fault. The survey tender Gannet Lorne ran its inner orbits on a lattice of tiny numbers, each one a moon or a rock or the ghost of a station, and somebody in the Ceres yards had drawn the whole thing on vellum in 2291. It had been wrong ever since.

She pulled the old chart up beside the live feed. The worlds ran out from the sun in a neat row: four small pips, then the big blue circle, then the ringed giant, then two plain spheres that nobody had bothered to name. Beside it sat the star polygon the yard engineers called the Tessel, its spokes meeting at a single hot point where every bearing converged. Her grandmother used to say the star was a compass for people who didn't trust compasses.
The error was in the ring. The ringed giant's arc was drawn a fraction too wide, and the spacing it implied put the two outer spheres a full day out of step. Mira ran the correction three times, then a fourth, because on the fourth the figures finally agreed with the sky.
She sent the corrected track to the tender's mind and watched the gaps close on the screen, one by one, like stitches pulled tight. The dots lined up. The rings sat true. Somewhere past the belt, a rock the charts swore was not there turned up exactly where the star said it should be, and she laughed out loud in the empty cabin.
