Four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

Four cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are shown in dynamic fighting poses, each with a weapon and a coloured mask band in purple, blue, red and orange. The bold black outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading on the shells give a classic comic illustration look. Bright greens dominate the piece, with the turtles overlapping across the skin to fill the frame.

Tuesday. The grate on Harrow Street was loose again, and I heard the boys before I saw them: Raphael arguing with the drain, Leonardo reciting something about honour, and Michelangelo narrating his own near-fall to an audience of pigeons. Donatello had already fixed the grate with a spanner, which he insists is not a weapon, though he carries it in the same sash as his staff.

The trouble was on the roof of the old bakery, where a crew of men in grey coveralls had been lowering crates on ropes. I told the boys to take the stairs. They took the fire escape instead, which is not the same thing. Leonardo went first with his twin blades held low, Raphael came in sideways with his sais, and Donatello knocked a chain from a man's hands so cleanly that the man stood there holding nothing for a full three seconds before he noticed. Michelangelo, in his orange band, ran the length of the parapet shouting that he was the one who had spotted the crates, and I will admit he had.

When it was over, the crates were back in the van, the van was on its way to the precinct, and my sons were sprawled on the tar in a heap of green, their bands tangled and their breath coming in whoops. Raphael was still scowling at Leonardo. Michelangelo was eating the last slice of somebody's abandoned pizza. Donatello was asleep with his staff across his knees.

I counted them twice, as I always do. Four each time.
