Above the Cwm pit head there was a row of cottages, and in the last of them lived four turtles who had come up out of the old drainage level the winter the roof fell in. Nobody in Hollin Bank had seen a turtle before, and nobody agreed on what to call them, so they were named for their bandanas: the orange one, the blue, the red, and the purple, who was the quiet one and carried two iron pins crossed over his chest like a pair of knitting needles.

They were good in the tunnels. A turtle can go where a man cannot, the older men said, and it was true they could crawl the low galleries on their bellies and come back with word of water rising before the pumps knew it. The purple one went first, pins in hand, tapping the wall with the tip of one until it rang true. The others followed with lamps and grumbled about the cold.
In the spring of the bad year the Gaffer sent a crew into the east workings for coal that was not there. The turtles went down after them. The purple one heard the ground shift before anyone else and stood under the cracking beam with his pins raised, holding the roof up on his shell until the men were out, and then the others were out, and last of all he was, with a cracked plate and grit in his mouth.
They say he still tapped the wall that autumn, though the pit was closed and the lamps were sold. Some nights a boy at the window heard it, two bright knocks and a pause, and knew the brothers were down there counting the men who had got home.
