Squirtle and Charmander in a heart frame
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
Squirtle and Charmander sit within a scalloped, heart-shaped frame on green and gold, with three Poke Balls around them and small star details. Bold dark outlines define the characters, which are shaded with smooth blue, orange and red tones. Partial tattoos are visible at the bottom edge of the photo, and a hand rests at the top right against a patterned garment.

The lamp at Gull Skerry went out at twenty past three, the way it always did when the wind swung round to the south-west. My uncle swore the lens was cursed. I swore nothing, because I was twelve and my job was to fetch the matches from the tin on the top step, and I had already dropped the tin twice.

Our two lodgers lived in the lantern room, which was not really a room for lodgers. The turtle had come up in a fishing net off Newlyn, its blue shell cracked like an old teacup, and my aunt had varnished the crack until it held. The lizard arrived the following spring, dripping from the rain, with a flame at the end of his tail that flickered whenever he was frightened. Nobody told him to stop being frightened. The light was dark more often than it was bright, and he took it personally.
That night the matches were damp. The lizard hopped onto the brass rail, tail held high, and the flame at its tip bent toward the wick as if it had been waiting years to be asked. The turtle went down the spiral stairs one bump at a time to heave the clockwork weights back up the tower. I climbed behind them with the oil can, and the three of us worked until the great lens turned and threw its white arm out across the black water.
In the morning a trawler came in through the gap with its crew waving their caps. My uncle said it was the lamp. I said nothing. I kept the three red and white capsules my aunt had found in the net on the windowsill, where the sun came through them, because nobody believed me about the lizard and the turtle, and I did not need them to.
