Fox and sunset on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A fox stands side on with its tail curling down, drawn with loose black linework over watercolour-like washes of orange, brown and green. Behind it a red and yellow sun with swirling blue rings sits above rolling green hills. The design fills the upper arm and extends onto the shoulder, with the fox shown in the centre of the frame.

You have been walking the top road since the bell at Hallam Farm stopped, and the sun sits on the ridge like a coin someone has forgotten to pick up. The fox is already ahead of you, trotting along the drystone wall with her brush held low, stopping every few yards to look back as if she has been sent to fetch you. Your boots are full of the day's mud, and your pocket holds the last of the bread you were meant to take to your brother.

She leads you off the road and down past the reed beds, where the hills roll green into the dusk. The light goes orange, then the colour of the inside of a plum, and the blue rings around the sun begin to turn slowly over the water, as if someone were stirring the sky with a spoon. You have walked this valley all your life and never once seen the far bank from this side. The fox sits at the edge of the mere with her black legs planted in the wet grass, and you realise she is not waiting for you to catch up. She is waiting for you to stop.
So you stop. You sit on a flat stone, break the bread in two, and set the larger half down beside her. She eats without hurry, and when she is done she shakes the dust from her coat, which is the colour of rust and strong tea, and walks into the reeds without looking back. For a moment the last of the sun catches the top of the hill and holds there.
When you get home your brother asks where the bread went, and you tell him a vixen had it. He laughs until he sees your face. You do not tell him she showed you a path. In the morning, you think, you might go back the same way.
