Matching geometric wolf heads on upper arms

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two wolf heads sit side by side on the outer upper arms, each built from angular facets of shading. The left wolf is mostly grey and beige with teal accents, while the right is shaded in blues and teal. The denim sleeves and dark background frame the two designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The innkeeper's daughter had counted six days of snow when the two wolves came down off the pass, one the colour of ash on a cold hearth, the other the blue of ice under moonlight. They did not growl. They sat either side of the door as if they had been hired to keep it shut, and Marta, who did not believe in hired wolves, bolted the oak and went to fetch her father.

Her father, Anselm, had kept the Crooked Heron for thirty winters and knew a debt when one walked in with frost on its ruff. He set two bowls of barley broth on the flagstones. The grey one ate first, slow and careful, while the blue one watched the room in sharp angles, turning its head as though the world had been cut into pieces and it was matching them back together. When the broth was gone, the grey wolf stood and pressed its nose against the cold window, and beyond the glass a single lantern moved along the road.

A traveller was out there. Anselm knew the lantern by its swing, a lean to the left like a man who had once broken his hip. Marta opened the door herself, and the wolves rose together and went out into the drift without a sound, the grey one breaking the trail, the blue one following the same line exactly, so the traveller would see two paths of prints where there had been only one.

By morning the snow had stopped and the lantern hung on the inn's own hook, its owner asleep by the fire. Anselm found two bowls on the step, scraped clean, and two sets of tracks leading back up toward the pass. Marta still bolts the door every night, though nobody has asked her to, and she leaves the bowls out anyway.
