Fox riding a chopper on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A fox in a dark jacket rides a black and grey chopper motorcycle, with orange and white on the fox's face and muzzle. The bold outlines and flat, graphic shapes give it an illustrative look, with a soft dark shadow beneath the bike. The two photographs show the same tattoo from a front angle and from a side angle on a bent leg.

Ada Pennock found the fox's boots by the boiler again, which meant he had been out on the bike past midnight. Marram House had taken in commercial travellers, two widowers and a man who sold barometers, but never before a fox in a dark leather jacket who paid his rent in folded tenners and kept his helmet on at breakfast.

The chopper stood on the gravel by the bins, black as a boot and bright at the chrome, its long forks catching the first grey light coming off the North Sea. At the start of the season she had asked him what he did for a living. He said he carried things that could not be posted. She had let it lie, the way she let the gulls lie on her roof, because the tenners were good and the pipes did not knock when he was in.

That morning he sat on her front step with his gloves in his lap and the engine ticking as it cooled. 'Coast road's shut at Overstrand,' he said. 'Tide's over the lane. I'll go the long way round, over the top.' He did not look at her when he said it. She saw the envelope before he handed it over, thick and buff, with Marram House written across the front in careful capitals.

Inside were four weeks more than he owed and a postcard of the lighthouse at Happisburgh with nothing written on the back. Ada stood at the gate until the headlamp had bounced along the front and up the hill and gone out. When the sun cleared the cliffs, the tide had already smoothed the sand where the wheels had turned, and the only sign he had been there was the dark pool of shadow he had left on the gravel, its edges soft, waiting for the rain.
