The linework is bold and dark, with soft blended shading across the fills. Bright purples, oranges, yellows and blues dominate the piece, which is centred on the upper back.

Joss came out with the thermos and found her there. She told him the old story while the tea went cold between them. The fox, she said, carried the sun on one shoulder and the moon on the other, and it was the only creature that could keep both of them in the sky at once. When it slept, the sun and moon were allowed to rest too, and that was why the year stood still in the dead weeks. Where its belly touched the ground, the river came up in spring, and wherever its paws had rested, daisies came up before anything else.

Joss laughed and said she'd been reading too many seed catalogues. Ruth only nodded toward the barn floor. The fox was gone, and in the patch of sunlight it had left, a single white daisy was standing in the straw, its petals open and perfectly dry, as if the frost had not been allowed to come in there at all.
