Friends and sisters script tattoos on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The top photograph shows the word friends in flowing black script, written upside down relative to the viewer. The lower photograph shows the word sisters in the same looping script, with small solid heart shapes at the letter ends. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the composition frames each word against pale skin and a dark shoe edge.

Hetty had been lettering the Anchor's front window since six, working backwards through the glass so the words would read true from the pavement. Her sister Dot held the stepladder and complained about the wind off the harbour, which had already lifted two of the gold leaf sheets and sent them skittering under a parked van.

The landlady wanted FRIENDS across the top pane, in the looping script she had seen on a chalkboard in Brighton. Hetty agreed, but she painted the word in reverse, every letter mirrored, because that was the only way the brush would obey her hand on glass. When she finished the final S, she dabbed a small black heart at the end of the stroke, the way their mother used to sign birthday cards, and Dot climbed down to inspect it with her hands on her hips.
"You've put a heart on the friends," Dot said. "Sisters get hearts. Friends get a bit of gold and a handshake."
Hetty didn't argue. She went inside, sat at the bar with a half of bitter, and watched through the glass. From the inside, the word looked wrong and tangled, a row of backward letters that hardly spelled anything at all. Dot came in, shaking rain from her coat, and stood where Hetty had been standing, squinting at it.
"Oh," Dot said, and then nothing else for a while. Outside, the gold caught the streetlamp, and the two words sat one above the other on the glass, the same shape from either side.
