Sisters script with anchor on ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of the word Sisters in a flowing script, with a small solid anchor sitting beneath and crossing the letter t. The linework is clean and the lettering is filled in solid, with no shading or colour. The close side view shows the ankle and heel against a wooden floor, with the tattoo centred on the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dinghy was called Mab's Patience, a joke our father made the year he bought her, and by the November gale Mab had none left. Ruth had the tiller and I had the bailer, and somewhere off the Scarrow buoy the anchor chain jumped its roller and went over the side with a noise like a dropped piano.

Ruth wanted to cut the warp. I wanted to hold on to it, because the rope was the only thing between us and the Teeth, and the Teeth were close enough that I could see the white water slapping their black backs. We argued the way we always had, loudly and without once looking at each other, until the wind decided for us and rolled the boat broadside.

It was Ruth who went over the bow with the boathook, one leg hooked under the stem and her hands gone the colour of candle wax. She got the eye of the anchor on the third try and came up spitting seawater and laughing, which I have never understood and have never stopped envying. We hauled it aboard together, hand over hand, for what the church clock later swore was three hours.

We had the word cut into our skin in the spring, at a parlour above the chandler's on Quay Street, with a small solid anchor tucked under it. Ruth says the anchor is for holding on. I say it's for the weight. We have never agreed, and we have never once let go of the boat.
