Small black and grey tattoo of a d-pad, two lettered round buttons and two pill-shaped buttons on the inner wrist.

Game controller buttons on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo on the inner wrist shows a four-way directional pad, two circular buttons marked with the letters A and B, and two short rounded bars beneath them, arranged like a game controller. The linework is a simple dark outline with light grey shading inside the d-pad and buttons. The design is set against plain skin with a tiled floor and a dark sleeve in the background.

Tuesday, and the cabinet in the back of the Anchor's function room has finally started eating coins again. Mrs Okonedo says the fault is the power board, not the joystick, and that I should stop kicking it. I said I wasn't kicking it. I was pressing it, which is different, and she gave me the look she usually saves for the bins.

The real trouble is the controller I brought in from home. The d-pad sticks on the left so every press goes down and then halfway back, and the A and B buttons have worn down to smooth dips where my thumb always lands. I rang my brother about it and he said I should just buy a new one, which is the sort of advice you give when you have never once played a game that mattered to you at two in the morning.

So I sat on the step with a screwdriver and the cheap plastic shell in my lap, and I spent an hour coaxing the stuck pad back into its housing. When it finally clicked, I pressed A, then B, then up, down, and the little rounded bar at the bottom of the screen blinked the way it always does. Nobody was there to see it except the cat on the bins, and the cat didn't care at all.
