Paw print in a heart on the wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small black outlined heart encloses a solid blue paw print with four toe pads and a main pad. The linework is clean and even, and the blue fill is flat with no visible shading. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with the hand raised against a dark background and a blurred shelf of objects behind it.

Brother Tobias kept the gate at Saint Brannoc's, high above the salt marsh, and the winter the river froze he found a dog asleep against the bread store. It was thin and grey at the muzzle, and it would not be sent down the hill. The cellarer said dogs were a poor fit for a house of silence. The dog, whose it was nobody could say, ate what the brothers left and walked the cloister with its tail low, never once barking at the bell.

In spring the abbot sent Tobias out to the far farms with the tithe carts, and the dog came too, trotting behind. At the ford it stopped and would not cross. It sat down in the mud until Tobias turned back to fetch it. That evening a girl came up the road from the high pasture, saying her little sister had gone after the goats and not come down. The dog went ahead without being asked. Tobias followed with the lantern and found the child under an overhang of rock, cold but breathing, with the dog lying across her legs until the light reached them.
The abbot asked what the brothers should call the dog, and Tobias had no name for it. He had only the marks it left in the wet ground at the ford each morning, four toes and a pad pressed where it had waited for him. So the brothers drew that mark on the gate: a heart in black ink, and inside it a paw in the blue the scribes kept for the saints' cloaks.
The dog died the following winter, old, under the bread store. They buried it below the orchard, and Tobias painted a fresh paw on the gate post with the last of the blue. Rain has run down that wood for many years since, and the blue is still there, though no dog has walked the ford in all that time.
