Gem, drop, sun and flower finger tattoos
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Four small motifs are tattooed one per finger: a grey faceted gem, a blue water droplet, a yellow sun with radiating points, and a multicoloured flower or mandala. The outlines are bold and simple, with flat fills and little shading. The background is dark and the hand is shown from the front, with other tattoos visible on the back of the hand.

Dear Tomas,

You asked me in your last letter why the Salt Reeve keeps four stones on his fingers instead of rings, and I have finally got round to answering, though my hand shakes now and the ink is the last of the good black from the market at Orrin Cross. Listen. When the old king Ebbard split the kingdom of Maren between his four sons, he gave each of them a thing that could not be divided. The eldest took the grey gem, which is the mountain's patience. The second took the blue drop, which is the river that feeds every well between here and the sea. The third took the yellow sun, and the youngest took the flower that opens only where three roads meet.
The sons quarrelled for a season, as sons do, and then the drought came. The sun burned so hard that the wells went to mud, and the youngest brother, who had always been the one laughing, walked to the mountain with his flower held up and asked his brothers to come with their own. None of them would. So he went alone to the place where the river is born, and he sat there four days, opening and closing his hand, until the eldest came down with the gem, then the second with the drop, then the third with the sun, each of them ashamed and each of them carrying the little thing they had hidden.
That is why the Reeve wears all four. He says a kingdom is only the things its people are willing to hand each other. Write to me before the frost, and bring me a proper pen.
Your uncle, Hesk
