Geometric raccoon face on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raccoon face is tattooed on the arm, with its black eye mask, dotted nose and rounded ears filled with diamond and triangle patterns. The shading is built from stippled dots and solid black areas, and fine dotted outlines frame the design. The image is in black and grey and is centred on the tattoo against plain skin and a wooden surface.

The raccoon came down Hollis Lane every night the year the mill shut, and every night Mrs Pardoe left the back door on the latch and a saucer of bread crusts on the step. Nobody in Carrow Bridge thought much of it. A raccoon was a thief and a nuisance, but this one was tidy about it, and it never once tipped the bins.

The old men at the Crown said the animal had a bargain with the river. They said it wore a mask so the river could not tell it apart from the night, and that the diamonds on its back were scraps of moon it had gathered from puddles after rain, stitched together one at a time with its patient little paws. Mrs Pardoe laughed at them. She had heard the story from her own mother, who had heard it from hers, and she knew the tellers liked a good lie more than a true one.
Then in March the river rose over the lower bridge and took the Dunmore boy's bicycle and nearly took the boy. The raccoon was on the wall that night, sitting very still, dark eyes fixed on the water. In the morning there was a line of small grey diamonds pressed into the mud along the towpath, each one the size of a shilling, leading from the water back to the lane.
Mrs Pardoe swept them into a tin and kept them on her dresser. The raccoon came for its bread that week as usual, and she set the saucer down, counted the crusts out loud, and left it to eat in peace.
