The stone marker at Kessel Gap had been cut with its arrow pointing the wrong way for as long as anyone in the customs hut could remember, and my supervisor Renata insisted it was deliberate. Every spring the surveyors came up from the valley with their brass instruments and their lunch tins, and every spring they argued over the same tin of biscuits about whether the chevron at its head was meant to point at us or at the road we were forbidden to take.

Teodor Vane, who measured everything in triangles because he said squares lied about their corners, was the only one who ever stayed past dusk. He would sit on the low wall with his pencil and copy the stacked shapes into his notebook, the red triangle, the teal diamond bleeding through the layers, the three dark points at the base, until the cobbles went grey and the lamps came on in the guardhouse. He told me the shaft was the only honest part, because a line has no opinion about where it has been.
I stopped asking him questions after the night the lamps failed. In the dark I could only see the outline of the stone, and I understood that the arrow did not point at the road or at the valley but straight down at the cobbles, at the exact place where a man standing still would be counted as having crossed. Teodor had already gone home. In the morning I wrote my report in neat block capitals, stamped it, and recorded the crossing as complete, because the shadow of the shaft lay across the line at noon and the form has a box for that.
