Geometric bear head on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bear head facing forward fills most of the tattoo, built from angular facets with rounded ears and a teal muzzle. The shading moves from magenta and pink at the top to violet at the sides, with small highlights in the eyes. The tattoo sits on the outer upper thigh against a soft-focus background, with the photo cropped below the waist and above the knee.

The bear had come down the Thames in the spring flood, riding a stack of pallets like a raft, and nobody on the moorings at Brentford knew what to do with him. Old Winifred Pyke, who had kept the lock-keeper's hut for forty years, said bears were no business of the canal and put a kettle on. The bear, who had no name and did not seem to want one, sat on the towpath with his big square head turned towards the water and watched the coloured light come off the oil slicks as if it were a show put on for him alone.

By the third day the children from the narrowboats had decided he was a fox in a clever disguise, and the dog from the Dutch barge had decided he was nothing worth barking at. Only Winifred noticed that he never ate the bread they left out. He drank from the lock gate instead, slowly, and each time he lifted his muzzle the light caught the facets of his face and turned them pink, then violet, then a teal so bright it hurt to look at.
On the fourth morning he was gone, and in his place on the wet stones was a single sheet of paper, weighted with a bottle of cider. It was a map of the river drawn in angles and triangles, every bend of the Thames shaped like a crystal, and in the corner, in a careful hand, someone had written: for the keeper, who gave me the kettle. Winifred folded it into her apron pocket and said to the kettle, very firmly, that she would not be telling anyone a thing about it.
