Geometric circle and hexagon forearm tattoos

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two side-by-side forearm tattoos show a circle and a hexagon, each built from thin intersecting lines, inner circles and crosshair-like strokes. The top photo shows single-colour purple linework, and the lower photo shows the same designs redrawn in blue and red, with a solid black band above and a dashed line beneath. The designs sit centrally on the inner forearms against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down by the stove, and mind the kettle, it's older than the barge. Your great-grandad ran the Mary Ellen up from Gainsborough with a brass gauge and a notebook full of circles, and every one of them meant something to the water. He chalked them on the bulkhead so the engine man could read them in the dark.

Now the lock at Torksey had a fault nobody could find. The gates sat a hair out of true, and every boat coming down would lurch like a drunk man stepping off a kerb. Old Ada Pryce, who kept the lock house, walked the cut three nights running with a lamp and a hexagonal nut in her coat pocket, a nut that had dropped off the sluice gear years before. Each night she turned it over and counted its six sides against the round wheel of the paddle, and each night the numbers wouldn't sit together.

On the fourth night she laid the nut over the chalk drawing and saw it plain. The circle was the wheel, the hexagon the nut that turned it, and the crosshairs ran straight through the one pin that had been filed short. She went down with a file and a spanner before first light.

When the first barge came through as smooth as butter, the bargee put his head out and asked who'd done it. Ada just pointed at the lock beam, where the boy from the Mary Ellen was tracing the big circle with a wet finger, his lips moving as he counted the sides.
