Geometric designs across a woman's upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's upper back is covered in small geometric motifs, including diamonds, a vertical arrow or feather line, triangles, arrows and two ampersands. The shapes are drawn in thin black and white outlines and fills, with some solid black areas and simple line detail. They appear to be temporary tattoos, and the plain white backdrop and soft natural light keep the focus on the designs.

You are counting rows in the Bramley orchard at Hollins Cross when the first wasps find the windfalls, and the morning is already thick with that sweet rot. Your grandfather's chalk lies in your apron pocket, worn to a stub. Every tree carries its small mark on the trunk: a diamond for sound fruit, a triangle for the ones to be pressed, an arrow pointing downhill towards the frost hollow where the cold settles first.

The ledger in the packing shed has the same marks in brown ink, and beside them the initials of men long gone. Two ampersands sit at the foot of the page, one for him and one for Walter Pell, who shared a flask with him every harvest and never once paid for the cider. You used to think the symbols were a kind of shorthand for luck. Now you know they were a map of who owed whom.
This morning the diamonds on row nine do not match the ledger. Someone has walked the boundary in the dark and re-chalked the trunks, so that the good Bramleys now seem to belong to the neighbouring field. You follow the thin line of pruned branches, fine as a feather's spine, to the hedge, where a single arrow has been cut into the bark of the old stile, pointing back the way you came.
You take the chalk from your pocket and draw a triangle around the wrong tree, pressing hard, the way he taught you. Overhead the wasps keep to their business. By noon the lorry will come for the crates, and your name will be written in the ledger beside the mark, in ink that will not wash out.
