Geometric eagle with spread wings on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large eagle with outstretched wings is built from angular, faceted shapes and drawn in bold black outline. Fine parallel hatching fills the wing feathers and tail, while the head and body use triangular panels. The black ink sits on warm skin against a plain, softly blurred background, with the bird centred across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener at Hollin Row had a wall of grey slate that the frost kept splitting, and each spring she mended it with stones pulled from the beck. One March a hawk came up the valley and would not leave. It sat on the coping with its wings spread wide, as if it meant to be counted.

Her neighbour, a glazier named Oswin Pell, said the bird was a sign from the hill folk, who cut their eagles in straight lines because curves belonged to the lowland people. He walked up with a sheet of smoky pane and a diamond point, and by evening he had made a bird of it. Every wing was a row of slanted shards, the tail fanned like a closed book, and the head was three panels meeting at a hooked beak. He set it on the wall beside the real one and went home.

The hawk studied the glass bird for a long while. Then it lifted off and flew down the valley, and the old folk said the glass had drawn the frost into itself, so that every crack ran into a feather instead of the stone. The wall did not split again that winter, or the next.

Oswin would take no money for the work. When Mered asked him why, he said a bird that stayed was payment enough, and he pointed at the fine lines he had scratched into each feather. Those, he said, were what kept the wings from breaking, and they were the only part he had ever been proud of.
