Geometric feather on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single geometric feather runs horizontally along the forearm, built from overlapping triangles, quadrilaterals and a straight central stem. The linework is thin, consistent black outline with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the arm against a dark top and a blurred background.

In the city of Mallow Quay the lamplighters on Tanner Street said that after midnight a bird flew over the rooftops with no colour in it, only edges. Ada Venn kept a mending shop under the railway arches and sewed the nets of the fishermen's wives. One wet night a stranger came in out of the rain and laid a feather on her counter. It was cold and grey and made of straight lines that crossed and fell away from one another. He said it was the last thing his brother had drawn before the river took him, and that every shape in it was a room his brother had not been let into.

Ada counted by lamplight: eleven triangles, four quadrilaterals, and a stem as straight as a ruler. She asked what the feather was for. The stranger said a feather is only useful if something is carried on it. Ada's mother had taught her never to take a thing that had no weight, so she told him to leave it where it lay. He laughed, though not unkindly, and went out into the rain without his coat.
She kept the feather in the drawer with the thimbles. Each night after the last tram, she traced the stem with a darning needle and found that the lines held together only when she did not look at them straight on. By the end of March the back wall of the shop had gone soft as wet paper, and through it she could hear the river.
In the morning the lamp was out and the shop door stood open. The drawer was empty and the counter was bare, except for one thin black line of ink running out under the door and away up Tanner Street, lifting a little at each corner as if something light were following it.
