Mary Ashdown had the lantern hook in her hand and no lantern on it, because the wick had frozen to the tin the night before and her brother had taken the good one down to the lower field. The snow had come in sideways across Hob's Acre since noon, and three of the ewes were still out there, along with the old tup who would not come in for anybody.

Her grandmother had said the hook was older than the farmhouse. Three lanterns hung one below the other, each a little lower than the last, so that from the lane at dusk you saw three points of light stacked like the tail of a kite. The top light was for the people coming home. The middle was for the stock still out. The lowest was for whoever had gone past the gate and was not coming back by it, and nobody lit that one unless they had to.
She did not light it. She tied the blue twine round her waist, took the lamp with the cracked chimney, and went out with the wind pushing at her back like a hand that wanted her to hurry. She found the tup first, pressed against the gate with his breath smoking. Then the ewes, one of them down in a drift and too stubborn to rise. Coming back she lost the house in the white and kept the lamp low, counting her steps the way her grandmother had taught her.
At the hedge she turned and saw the farmhouse window, and beyond it, faint, three lights stacked one over another. Someone had lit the lowest one. Her brother, most likely, who had never once done as he was told. It meant he had gone out after her and lost his way. She stood at the hedge a long time with the snow filling her footprints, then she turned the lamp up and went to find him.
