A geometric elephant made of angular, folded-looking panels is outlined in black on pale skin. Fine stippled dots shade the facets to create depth, while the flat outline leaves the rest of each panel unshaded. The design is centred on a plain background, with a small star partly visible at the lower edge of the frame.

The last train has gone and the lost property tin is still on the desk, so you open it yourself. Umbrellas, a child's mitten, a bus pass belonging to someone called Mrs Okafor. At the bottom sits a paper elephant no bigger than your palm, folded so tight that its trunk curls back on itself and its legs stand square on the tin lid as if it means to walk out.

You know the trick of it. Your grandfather taught you on a Sunday at the kitchen table, two squares of newsprint and a patience you never had, but this one has been folded by someone who did not hurry. Every edge is crisp. Along one flank a few pencil dots have been pressed in, small grey points that show which faces turn toward the window and which turn away.

Platform four is quiet. The 23:14 for Crewe has pulled out and the signal lamps hum over the empty rails. You carry the elephant out to the bench where the girl sat at dusk, the one with the cardboard suitcase who kept checking the departure board as though it might change its mind. She never came back for it. You set the elephant on the slats facing the timetable.

At six the next morning the first train rattles in and the bench is empty, but the elephant is gone from where you left it. In its place someone has left a ticket stub folded into a small star, and a note in pencil that reads only: keep the dots for the next one. You read it twice, then put the kettle on.
