Geometric origami-style animal on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a faceted animal outline built from angular, paper-folded panels, with dashed interior lines suggesting creases. It is drawn in black linework with no shading or colour, set against pale skin. The design sits diagonally across the forearm and fills most of the frame.

The gulls have had the last of the bread again, and Mrs Pengelly is shouting at them from the chandlery steps when you reach the quay with a sheet of yesterday's shipping notices under your arm. Your father is out past the breakwater with the Marigold, and the tide is turning the wrong way for him to be back before dark. You sit on an upturned creel and smooth the paper across your knee, the way he taught you, folding on the diagonal first, then corner to corner, until the sheet gives up its flatness.

Crabs are harder than they look. The pincers want a sharp crease and a wet thumbnail, and the body wants to be a diamond that somehow still keeps its legs. You fold four times and unfold three. Behind you the boats knock together at their moorings, and a man from the fish market whistles through his teeth at the sea. Each crease is a small decision that cannot be taken back, which is what your father says about knots, and about weather, and about the sea itself.

When the Marigold finally comes round the point, low in the water and running her lamp, you hold up the finished crab so the last sun catches its ridges. It is lopsided, one claw longer than the other. Your father laughs across the water and does not ask what you have made. He only lifts one hand from the wheel, and you know he can see the dashed lines of the folds from the boat, the places where the paper has been worked and will hold.
