Geometric wolf head on a thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large wolf head fills the thigh, drawn with bold outlines, angular geometric panels and fine hatched lines. Stippled dots and solid black shading give the face depth, while small stars and a row of pine trees appear along the lower edge. The piece is entirely black and grey and sits centred on the skin, with a grey garment and hands visible at the top of the frame.

The wolf came down from the high pines on the night the miller's boy lost the chapel bell, and it did not bite him. It sat on a fallen block of the castle wall with its ears flat against the wind and waited while he finished crying into his sleeve. Nobody in the valley had seen a wolf so grey about the muzzle, and nobody had seen one sit so still.

The castle had been raised by a lord who measured the sky with knotted string. He cut every window into a triangle and every tower into a diamond, so that on clear nights the stars fell through the stonework and told him when to sow. When he died the masons went home and ivy filled the windows, but the wolf still knew the arrangement. "Seven stars through the north diamond," it said. "The bell lies under them, in the lake."
The boy climbed the north tower with a rope knotted at his waist. The flagstones at the top were cut with lines and small stars, and the seventh star sat over a hole no wider than a hand. He lowered a candle stub through it and watched the flame shiver far below, over water frozen at its edges. When he asked the wolf how it knew the way, it only said that wolves count in the dark because there is little else to do.
They brought the bell up at dawn, hauled hand over hand, green with lake weed and ringing faintly as it swung. The boy struck it once at the chapel door and the whole valley came out to hear. When he turned to thank the wolf there was only the grey block of wall, a row of pine tops black against the sunrise, and a diamond scratched in the frost on the stones.
