Geometric wolf with dreamcatcher on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A geometric wolf head in dark outline sits above a mandala-style dreamcatcher with beaded strands and hanging feathers. The wolf is drawn with bold angular linework, while the dreamcatcher uses finer violet lines. Soft blue and purple shading sits behind the mandala, and the tattoo is centred along the length of the forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down to Porthkennack the week the herring turned, and nobody thought to bar the net loft door, because wolves were something the old men talked about in the pub, like the sea serpent off Lundy. Mags Penhallow found its tracks in the wet sand below the slipway at first light, each print as neat as a stitch, and she stood there with a bucket of bait going cold in her hand.

Her grandmother had a saying about dreamcatchers, which were not a Cornish thing at all but had come home with a sailor who hung one over his wheelhouse after a voyage to Halifax. It caught what came in at night, the old woman said, and let the good things through. Mags did not believe it. She strung one anyway from a hoop of driftwood, knotting horsehair through the middle, threading glass beads blue and violet like the sky before rain, and hanging three gulls' feathers from the bottom where the wind could find them.

The wolf sat on the breakwater three nights running, grey as the granite, watching the boats come in. On the fourth night it did not sit. It walked right up to the loft, pressed its long face to the gap under the door, and breathed out a cloud that smelled of salt and cold iron. Mags opened the door. She had nothing in her hands but the hoop.

It looked at her for a long time, then turned its head toward the beads swinging in the draught. It did not snarl. It went back down the slipway with the tide, and in the morning the net on the far hook was whole, every knot tied tight and every float in its place, though nobody in Porthkennack would ever admit to having mended it.
