Dear Tom, the cat has eaten the whole of Sunday's supper again, and this time she had the decency to look sorry about it. Dad says she is the only creature on the rock with any sense of occasion. The ferry brought the pizza across on Tuesday, wrapped in a tea towel and sweating through its box, and I swear she heard the lid lift from the top of the stairs.

Mrs Kerr in the village sends one over every week now that the supply boat is hopeless. She cuts the pepperoni into little red moons and lays them in a neat ring, which Dad says is showing off. The cat, whose name is Marmalade for reasons nobody can explain, has never once been let near the pepperoni, but she sits on the windowsill every Tuesday with her tail wrapped round her feet like a woman waiting for a bus.

The gale came in on Thursday night. The lamp gearbox stuck halfway through its turn, and Dad went up the tower with the spanner while I held the torch. Halfway up I heard a thump behind me, and there was Marmalade, perched on top of the lens housing, cheese dripping off her chin and whiskers out like wire. When the mechanism loosed and the beam swung round, she lit up gold, every crumb of her shining, and out on the black water a trawler flashed its lamp back twice.

The skipper rang the station the next morning to ask whether we'd been feeding the cat on the tower. Dad said yes, and that she was owed a raise. Come at Easter, bring a proper cheese, and don't let her see the box.
