Girl on a crescent moon swing on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small figure of a girl with long hair sits on a crescent moon, holding the rope of a swing that trails off to the right toward a small hanging ornament. The work is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading or fill, so the design relies on the outline alone. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a dark purple fabric background, with the design running diagonally across the forearm.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down in Wrexham on Tuesday, and Mr Osgood stood in the mud counting the poles as if they might have wandered off on their own. I helped Dad fold the last of the canvas. You'd have laughed at me. I was crying so hard I kept folding the same corner over and over until Mrs Pelling took it off me.

The moon swing is still up, though. Nobody wanted to strike it because it is only a crescent of painted ash with two ropes, and Mrs Pelling says it weighs more than the lorry's promises. So I sat on it last night in the empty field while the generator coughed. I had the brass bell from the lion cage tied to the end of the rope, the one that rang when the cats came out, and I swung until the bell went quiet on its own.

Here is the thing I didn't tell anyone. When you sit high enough, the moon looks cut out for you specially, a little bowl to hold you while the rest of the world goes out like a lamp. I thought about staying on it until the frost came. Instead I stood up, unhooked the bell, and rang it once for the empty seats.

The van leaves at six for Ludlow. Keep my bed made up, and I'll be home for Christmas if the roads allow. Give Mum my love and tell her the bell is coming with me. Your loving sister, Nell. P.S. I left the moon in the field. Somebody will need a swing.
