Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The word give is written in bold black serif lettering above a shaded tree stump with a small solid red heart on its face. Black outlined grass blades sit along the base of the stump. The stump is shaded in grey with a soft highlight, and the heart is the only colour in the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ilse counted the loaves twice before she set them on the stump, because the guard at Harrow Gate had started asking what a girl carried over the line before sunrise. The stump stood exactly on the boundary stone, its rings half in one country and half in the other, and nobody on either side would claim the grass that grew around it.

Her grandmother had told her how the oak once shaded both villages, how a surveyor with a red ledger ran the border straight through its heart the winter the treaty was signed. The tree was felled that January. No one wanted the timber, so it stayed where it fell, and over the years people came to it in turns, taking what they needed and leaving what they could spare. Ilse had never met anyone who did the leaving at the same hour she did, until the morning the bread was gone and a jar of honey stood in its place, its lid tied with grey string.

After that they left things for a month without speaking. Ilse left candles and darning wool. The other side left a whetstone, a folded pair of gloves, and once a child's drawing of a hen, which she pinned above her bed. In the fourth week she found nothing but a single red thread wound twice around the stump's face, pressed into the bark where the rings were softest.

She stood there a long while with the wind pulling at her coat. Then she unwound a length of her own red wool from the spool in her pocket, tied it beside the first, and walked back across the line without once looking over her shoulder.
