She kept a tin of glitter under her bunk, salvaged from a costume hold before the hold was vented, and nobody on Carrow's Reach had asked what it was for.

The teal she saved for the sides, two curls that unwound like the vine tendrils on the hydroponic racks. "Keep still," she told the boy, though he had not moved. "The sun has to see you before it will turn."

The engineers laughed at her in the mess until the lamp in Deck Nine flickered, then held, then brightened by a single degree. Dolan, who ran the water reclaimers and trusted only gauges, came down with his sleeve already pushed back. He asked her to draw the same mark on the reactor housing. She told him the glitter would not survive the heat, and he stood there a long while before nodding.

By the next watch, half of Carrow's Reach wore a small sun somewhere they could see it. When the corridor lights dimmed for the night cycle, the glitter caught what little glow remained and shone back, faint and scattered, like a fleet of small suns keeping pace with the ship.
