Glowing UV scrollwork tattoo on hand

Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand is photographed under ultraviolet light, so the ink glows bright cyan and white. The design is an ornamental arrangement of curling scrolls, leaf-like shapes and tendrils, drawn in clean, smooth lines with solid fills. The dark blue background and tight framing focus attention on the glowing motif, with a fainter patterned marking visible on the wrist above it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad had the ultraviolet torch cupped in his good hand when he switched off the headlamp, and the whole east wall of the level came alive. Fluorite, he said, the same stuff the shopkeepers in Castleton sold as Blue John, though down here under the ultraviolet it burned a green so sharp it stung my eyes. I was twelve and sure he was showing off for the new lad.

The old men had cut curls into these walls long before anyone drew a proper plan. Mrs Ashworth, who laid out the dead in the chapel, said the swirls were a language meant for whoever came after. I thought that was nonsense until the roof dropped at the far workings in March and the dust hung so thick the lamps went grey. Dad was on the wrong side of the fall, and nobody could reach him before the pumps shifted the water.

I took the torch and a coil of cord and followed the glow. Where the main passage split, a vine of cold light ran along the roof, doubled back over a leaf, then wound down into a spiral that pointed left. I followed it past three collapsed props, my breath loud in the rock, until the spiral ended in a gap no wider than my shoulders and Dad's voice came through it, cursing me for taking so long.

He was grey to the eyebrows and furious. I pressed my palm to the last curl of light, the way Mrs Ashworth had shown me the day she taught me to read the stone, and it was warm under my skin. Dad said nothing about the pumps or the water. He just crawled towards the glow and let it show him the way out.
