The mule had decided against the pass before we reached the first cairn, and Ines kept one hand on its halter and the other on the tin box strapped across my chest. 'Don't count the switchbacks,' she said. I counted them anyway. Forty-one to the shelf of scree, where the wind shoved at our backs like a bailiff who had already been paid.

Aunt Brigitte had cut the transfers in her kitchen at Sarnet, pressing gold foil with a hot iron until every arrow came out sharp. Feathers for the shepherds' wives, crescents for the midwives, chevrons for anyone who had walked the high road twice. 'Gold lies less than paint,' she told me. 'It catches the light so people remember which way you came.' I had sixty sheets in the box and a bee on every one, because the hives on the south slope had kept her alive through two bad winters.
At the saddle the snow turned to sleet and the foil began to curl at the edges. I pressed a chevron strip onto the mule's bridle, then a row of leaves along Ines's sleeve, smoothing each with my thumb while the wind tried to lift it away. Ines laughed and said the mule would now be impossible to live with. A bee, dazed by the cold, crawled out of the tin and walked onto my knuckle, its wings flat with frost.
We came down the far side with the sun behind us, the gold on the bridle throwing small coins across the rock. Below, the first village rang its bell, and I could see the arrow I had pressed on the gatepost catching the light and pointing up the hill toward us. I kept the bee on my hand until the path levelled out.
