Sit down by the range, lad, and mind the kettle, for this tale is longer than the tea. Old Hosea kept the galley of the Marjorie Penn for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody opened the tin under the flour bin but him.

Inside it was a sheet of gold leaf no thicker than a held breath, bought off a Dutch purser for two bottles of rum and a promise he never meant to keep. Hosea would lift it out on Sunday mornings and lay it with a wet brush along the brass chain of the lamp hooks, round the quatrefoil tiles behind the stove, and across the rosette on the oven door, until the whole galley glowed like a chapel. The men said it was daft. The cook said daft was what kept a ship afloat.
Then came the autumn off the Horn, when the purser found the tin and the bosun wanted the gold melted for a wager. Hosea went to the rail at midnight with the last square of leaf in his palm. The wind was working the rigging like a choir with no tune. He pressed the gold flat against the wet timber and watched the spray lift it, bright as a wing, out over the black water.
The purser still swears the galley shone that week, and the bosun never did collect his wager. Some nights, when the lamp swings and the chain catches the light, I could swear I see the wings of it going over the side. Pass me that ladle, boy, and mind you don't scorch the bread.
