Gold and silver metallic tattoo design sheet
Geometric · Colour · Flash
The sheet shows a set of thin metallic tattoo designs in gold and silver foil on a white background. The motifs include rows of cowrie-style shells, arrow and diamond bands, chain-link strips, wavy lines and fern or feather fronds, with a few isolated leaf shapes. Each design is a simple flat outline or solid shape arranged in horizontal strips, which makes the sheet easy to compare.

The foil came up from the coast in sealed crates, forty sheets to a crate, and my work at the Mint of Sennet was to cut each sheet into strips before the damp got into it. Gold went on the left bench and silver on the right. Master Ondine Varr had chalked a rule above the door so no apprentice could forget it: every shell, arrow, chain, wave and fern must come out whole, because the king's treasurer counted the offcuts each evening and a missing frond was a hanging matter.

I was nineteen and careful, and I had never once been tempted until my sister Ilse took the Thursday ferry to the island of Pell with a husband she had met twice. On the last morning I stood at the bench with a sheet of silver cowrie shells in my hands and the chalk rule staring at me. I cut one row of six shells clean from the sheet and folded it into my apron pocket. Then I cut the rest of the sheet to the line, as if nothing had happened, and waited for the treasurer to come with his ledger.
He counted for an hour. His finger stopped at the silver bench and stayed there. "One shell short," he said, and my throat closed. He looked at me for a long time, then at the gold arrows drying on the rack, and he sighed like a man who has been expecting a disappointment for years.
"Keep it," he said, "and see that the ferryman doesn't sell it back to me." I ran to the harbour with six silver shells warm against my hip and pressed one into Ilse's palm just before the gangplank lifted. She laughed, turned it over, and pinned it to the back of her wrist where the sun could find it. Out past the breakwater the boat turned its bow toward Pell, and the silver caught the light the same way the arrows on the rack had done all morning.
