Gold bride tribe script on wrists and forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Several arms and hands converge in a circle over a weathered wooden surface. Each visible wrist or forearm carries a gold metallic script reading bride tribe, in a thin, flowing hand. The gold text stands out against the skin tones, and the fingernails show pink, red and dark polish.

The snow shut the lane above Hebden by four o'clock, and by six the landlady at the Fell Hare had stopped pretending she could send anyone home. Six of us were left in the back parlour with a crate of sherry, a kettle that only boiled if you held the lid down, and the sheet of gold transfers Priya had bought in Leeds because she said a hen weekend needed a uniform.

Dinah peeled the backing with her teeth. We pressed the words on in turn, bride tribe in that thin looping hand, and nobody could get the second word straight on her own wrist, so we did each other's under the lamp, holding arms like surgeons. Maeve's came out crooked and she blamed her Yorkshire blood. We wet them with a flannel from the sink and rubbed slowly, and the gold lifted off the paper all at once, bright as a new coin.
When the power went we lit church candles from a drawer in the bar, and someone, I think Priya, said we should do what footballers do before a match. Nobody laughed. We stacked our hands in the middle of the table, six wrists and six small gold words catching the flame, and for a minute the window was so white with snow that we could have been anywhere at all.
By morning the plough had cleared the lane and the gold had worn to a dull shine on everyone but Dinah, who had scrubbed hers off at dawn so the photographs would be clean. I kept mine for two more days. On the train south I rubbed my wrist against Maeve's sleeve and felt the last flakes come away between us, and I let them go.
