Metallic temporary tattoo bands on wrists

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Several arms are shown with hands clasped together, each wearing metallic temporary tattoos in gold and silver. The designs are thin bands and cuffs with triangles, chevrons, diamonds, and dotted or wave-like patterns, with one shape resembling an eye motif. The shiny metallic inks stand out against the skin, and a watch and bracelets appear alongside them on the background of a dark wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The foil came in a biscuit tin marked ODDMENTS, and nobody had opened it since the Christmas pantomime, so Doreen Pilling had to prise the lid with a butter knife while the chorus stood in their rehearsal blacks, stamping on the boards to keep warm. Forty minutes to the half. The choreographer wanted the finale to catch the work lights like a shoal turning over in the sun, and the girls wanted what they had seen in a magazine in the dressing room, thin metal bands for the wrist.

Doreen cut them with pinking shears on the lid of a prompt book. Triangles for the first girl, chevrons for the second, a diamond lattice that tore twice and had to be pressed back together with a licked thumb. The eye motif was the last one, and she nearly left it in the tin. Her mother had drawn one like it on her own wrist the summer they came over from Gdańsk, a single almond with a dot for the pupil, to turn away whatever people were thinking about the new girl. She pressed it down hard and told nobody why.

When Malcolm the stage manager came up the iron stairs, swearing that the show would never open in time, he found the spare bands laid out in a neat row along the floorboards, gold and silver, not one of them crooked. The girls had their hands clasped in a huddle at the centre of the stage, shining like something dredged up from the harbour. He stood at the edge of the light and waited for them to finish their count. Then he called the half.
