Gold Bride Tribe temporary tattoos on wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Several hands are stacked together in the centre of the frame, with matching gold metallic temporary tattoos on the wrists. Each design reads BRIDE TRIBE in serif capitals with a pair of crossed arrows between the words. The ink is a flat metallic gold on skin, and the red clothing in the background contrasts with the metallic finish.

The transfers arrived on the Tuesday, forty of them stuck to a sheet of backing paper like a row of gold church windows. Marnie counted them twice on the kitchen table in flat 14, Ashworth House, while the kettle ticked and the lift outside groaned up the shaft with somebody's shopping. BRIDE TRIBE, the sheet said, in serif capitals, with a pair of crossed arrows sitting between the two words like a sign for a road nobody wanted to take.

The plan had been simple. Six women, one wedding in Scarborough, and gold on every wrist before the photographs. Nobody had mentioned the damp cloth, or that it had to be warm and not hot, or that the backing peeled like a sticky plaster if you rushed it. Jas rang at eleven to say her little boy had already used his three on the bathroom mirror and was asking whether the arrows were real.
On the Saturday they met on the landing of the fourteenth floor, because the lift had been out since Thursday and the stairwell smelled of bleach. They pressed the transfers on in the grey light from the window, cloths steaming in a mixing bowl, and Marnie held her own wrist still while Jas laughed and swore in turns. Then someone said, let's do the hands, and six wrists went into the middle, one on top of another, until the arrows all pointed at the same place in the centre.
By teatime the gold had gone dull at the edges, and by Monday it had gone altogether, except on Marnie's wrist, where a sliver of TRIBE clung on under the strip light. She stopped scrubbing at it on the third day. Every time the lift came up empty she glanced down to check the arrow still pointed the same way as the others.
