Gold metallic temporary tattoos on hands and wrists

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Four hands are laid flat on weathered wood, with gold and rose gold metallic temporary tattoos on the wrists, forearms and fingers. The designs are fine geometric outlines and bands, including diamonds, clover shapes, a lattice band and a rope-style cuff, with a small gold diamond on one finger. The image is warmly lit with brightly coloured nail polish and a gold watch visible, and the metallic finish is the dominant colour.

The die for the rope pattern had cracked straight across its middle, and the order for the Lisbon boutique was due on the Friday, so Dad spent the whole Wednesday bent over the bench with a jeweller's loupe in his eye, filing a hairline out of the brass. I sat beside him stacking sheets of backing paper and counting them twice, because counting was the only job he trusted me with.

Gold leaf is not really gold, not the way the sheets in the shop window look. It is beaten so thin that the light comes through it green, and it has to sit on a carrier film that will lift cleanly onto skin without tearing. Dad always said the trick was never the metal but the heat of the press. Too hot and the lattice band smeared into a blur; too cool and the clover flaked away like pastry. He liked the little diamonds best, the ones tucked in the corner of each sheet, because they were the only shape he could draw freehand without a stencil.

On Friday the parcel went out packed in tissue. Three weeks later a photograph arrived from Lisbon: four hands laid flat on a grey bench, the gold bands catching the afternoon sun. Dad pinned it above the press and studied it through his reading glasses for a long time. "Clover's a bit crooked on the left one," he said, and I saw from his face that he was pleased.
