Gold foil bride to be ring temporary tattoo

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A four-panel grid shows the same gold foil temporary tattoo on the inside of a forearm, photographed from slightly different angles. The design is a large ring with a diamond, with the words BRIDE to be and bride tribe set inside the band, and small sparkle shapes around it. The metallic foil has a textured, mostly gold finish with light silver highlights, against blurred skin and a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the Haverhill Grammar reunion expected Denise Okafor to arrive wearing a gold ring on her wrist, but there it was, flashing under the function room lights every time she reached for a sausage roll. BRIDE to be, it read, looped round the band of a diamond the size of a fried egg. Behind her, five women in matching foil were laughing at a joke I had clearly missed, and one of them had written BRIDE tribe across her own hand in biro, just in case.

In Year Eleven, Denise swore on her grandmother's Bible that she would never marry anyone, least of all a man who said 'ta-ra' instead of goodbye. We passed notes about it in chemistry, folded into tight triangles that Mr Pell confiscated twice. I had been her best friend for four years, and by the second glass of prosecco I was the one who had been left off the group chat that planned the hen weekend. The foil on her wrist had begun to lift at one edge, curling like the corner of a stamp.

She caught me by the coat rack. 'It's not a joke,' she said, before I'd opened my mouth. 'I need someone who knew me before I was sensible.' The sparkles, she told me, had been chosen by her sister, who had been running the whole thing from a spreadsheet since February. I looked at the little gold stars scattered round the ring and thought how clumsy they looked, how cheap, and then how bright.

When I peeled the loose corner back with my thumbnail, a flake of foil came away and stuck to my palm, glittering like something I'd been given rather than something I'd taken. I didn't tell her I'd kept it. I put it in my purse beside the folded note from chemistry, and it's still there.
