Small letter K and heart on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two tiny outlined tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two hands, one showing a letter K above an outlined heart and the other an outlined heart above a figure resembling an 8. The linework is thin and unshaded, and the healed ink appears pale pink against the skin. A fine gold chain bracelet with a small oval medallion rests on the left wrist, and a dark sleeve frames the lower left of the photo.

The back room of the Crown smelled of spilt bitter and wet wool, and by midnight the wedding party had thinned to four of us around a table where nobody had bothered to count the cards. Dessie kept the deck in his breast pocket like a passport. He had driven down from Carlisle that morning in a suit that didn't fit and a grievance about the seating plan, and he meant to take some of the groom's money before the last bus.

My sister Nell had married Tom at two o'clock in a church with a leaking gutter, and by eleven she had decided the only fair way to settle who would pay the marquee bill was a hand of nap. Priya dealt. Tom sat with his tie undone, pretending not to watch. Nell laid the king of hearts face up on the baize and said it was her stake, and that she would win back the whole marquee with the eight.
Nobody believed her, least of all Dessie, who had been bluffing since the soup. But Nell had counted every card that had gone out since eight o'clock, and she knew the eight of hearts was still sitting in the pack. She waited while the others folded, pushed the last of the coins forward, and turned over the card she had been keeping under her thumb all night. It was the eight of hearts, slightly bent at one corner, the one she had slipped into Tom's jacket on their first date as a joke he never let her forget.
Dessie paid up without a word and wrote an IOU on a beer mat, which Nell pinned to the corkboard by the bar. The marquee was covered. The two cards went home in her clutch, and in the morning she told me it had been the only honest hand of the whole weekend.
