Gold foil BRIDE tribe temporary tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The design shows the words BRIDE and tribe inside a circular ring, with a diamond ring motif and small sparkle shapes around it. It appears to be a metallic gold foil temporary tattoo rather than ink, with bold lettering and a clean, solid outline. The gold tone fills the frame against a soft, pale skin background, with the ring shapes blurred at the edges.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the luggage, because the 6.14 is always late on a Saturday and I've told this one often enough to get it right. Nobody believed Ada Corrigan when she stepped off the Leeds train with a gold ring printed on her wrist and a cardboard crown skewed on her head, and I'll not blame you for doubting it either.

Her tribe had come up the line with her, six women shrieking at the carriage doors, and they'd pressed the gold transfers onto each other's arms in the buffet at Carlisle. BRIDE sat across Ada's skin inside a circle, a little diamond perched on the rim, and sparkles scattered round it like someone had flicked salt from a cellar. Her real ring had gone down a drain outside the Crown the night before, so the foil was all she had to show Tom Haddow, the signalman she meant to marry on the Monday.
Dessie Rourke, who'd punched tickets on that platform since before the bridge was painted, watched her hold her wrist up to the lamp. He told her a ring that comes off with a wet flannel is honest about what it is, and a ring that stays on in the rain is only lying politely. She laughed at him, and he went back to his brush and his barrow.
The train pulled out past Penrith, and somewhere along the fells the gold began to lift at the edges. By the time it reached the sea the foil had gone from her wrist entirely, but the sparkles had stuck to the window glass in a row, bright as the night she lost her ring. Dessie swore he saw them there the next morning, and he's the only one of us who never had a reason to lie.
