Gold leaf design on the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand is shown from the back with a cascading design of gold leaves running from the knuckles towards the wrist, with a gold-toned leaf motif also on the wrist. The leaves appear finely outlined with simple inner detail and are rendered in a metallic gold ink or foil rather than shading. A gold ring and a gold bangle sit alongside the design, with turquoise gift boxes softly out of focus in the background.

Dear Nell,

The scaffold came down on Tuesday and the ivy has already started back over the north wall, so you will have to take my word for the chapel ceiling. Sixty-two leaves in the vault of the Lady Chapel at Harrowgate, every one of them beaten gold by hand, and Mr Pryce from the trust stood under them for a full ten minutes without speaking, which I took as approval.

The gold came off the book no thicker than a breath. You lift it on a brush and lay it down on the sized stone, and if you're quick it takes. If you hesitate it crumples like cigarette paper and you start the leaf again. Old Tobias taught me that with a mouthful of cold tea and a face like a wet Sunday. He used to say a perfect leaf was only a lucky one, and a good gilder was someone who could make the luck happen twice.

Something happened at the end of the week I haven't told you. A girl from the village came up with the tea urn and stopped in the doorway, because the sun through the broken east window had caught a flake of gold that had come off my cuff and was sitting on her wrist. She asked if she could keep it. I gave her the whole pinch, which was not mine to give, and she pressed it into the back of her hand and walked off down the hill as if she'd been crowned.

I'm posting this on Thursday. Tell Mum the vault is finished and I'll be home for the Sunday roast, and tell her I've still got gold under my nails, which will cause the usual fuss.

Love, Ros
