Hanging sign reading Gone to Market on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hanging wooden sign with the words Gone to Market is drawn in thin black linework on the top of a pale foot. The sign hangs from two small loops at its top, and the lettering is hand-drawn with slightly uneven strokes. The tattoo is shown in black ink against a black plastic sheet, with the toes in the lower left of the frame.

Mrs Penrose had the sign down off its two brass hooks before the lane was properly awake, wiping the dust from the lettering with the heel of her hand. The board was old elm, the paint gone soft at the edges, and it had said GONE TO MARKET every Thursday since her husband's father hung it there. Nobody in Little Haddon needed telling where the Penroses were on a Thursday. They only needed telling that the eggs were in the porch and the honesty box was full of pennies.

Her grandson Tobias came round the wall with a bucket of windfall apples and watched her turn the board over. "Who's going to read it if it's on the ground?" he asked. "The hens," she said, and she hung it back up, then took it down again, then carried it under one arm to the cart as though it were a prize hen herself.
The market at Barlow was three miles off and sold nothing that could not be carried home in a basket. They set up under the chestnut trees at seven. By nine the cart was empty of cheese and the sign was propped against the wheel, catching the sun. A girl from the big house stopped to read it and laughed, and asked whether the Penroses ever came back, and Mrs Penrose said they always did, that was the whole point of a sign like that.
