Quote in fine line script across a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot, from near the ankle towards the toes, reading Go Placidly Amidst the Noise and Haste. The linework is thin and even, with slight variation in the letter weight. The ink is solid black on skin, and the green grass in the background is the only other colour in the frame.

Mrs Ada Pinder had kept the copying desk at the Hebden Bridge goods yard for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had asked her to slow down. The telegrams came in fast, the consignment notes came in faster, and the carters shouted over the whistles of the shunting engines until the glass in the office windows hummed. Her hand had learned to keep pace with all of it, and her letters were quick, small and square.

The new boy, Tom Greaves, arrived in March with a cough and a habit of gazing out of the window. On his third morning he watched her write a manifest for forty crates of Irish linen and asked how she could bear the racket. She didn't look up. She dipped her pen and wrote the line that had hung above her desk since her mother gave her the card: Go placidly amidst the noise and haste.

He laughed, and she let him. Then she wrote it again, slower, the loops opening out as she had been taught at the national school, and pushed the card across the desk. It took him the best part of an hour to copy it, and by the time he finished the yard had gone quiet for the midday break.

Tom kept at the railway for forty years and rose to chief clerk. When the yard finally closed, he found the card folded inside an old ledger, its edges gone soft as cloth, and he read it aloud to nobody in particular while the last empty wagon rolled out past the window.
